500th post - October giveaway.

Yeah. A big milestone. 500 posts!
I was going to plan something big, however I am feeling a bit melancholy today. A bit of PTQD, a bit of the  that "from the past" business, not sure why now. It wasn't a good relationship, so not pining for that, but it does remind me of the days when I could pick up and leave when I wanted to. No obligations except rent, no children, no mortgage...blah blah. A free spirit, which I definitely was. It is also the middle of the holidays and I think we have all had enough of each other.
I desperately want to hop in the car and go to Belinda's, a 6 hour drive, and the kids want to go to the bach, a 1 hour drive....

Anyway, the question for today, would it be a complete cop out to do another black quilt? The design would be different, more contemporary. I have all these wonderful sassa lynne threads, and I want a background that will do them justice. I had thought denim, but that may be very difficult to work. The other thought was Cream.

Please give me you opinions on the colour (and denim if you have experience with it), and leave a comment to go in  the October draw for this postcard.

I baked a caramel slice, so I am sure I will feel better tomorrow    :)

ps, you can just leave a comment for the postcard...

Why would it be a cop out? If you still feel inspired by black and ideas you want to work through go with it. You said you half wished you had left the coloured fabric out of the the blocks, why not do it that way this time?

I'm a great believer in stitching what you 'want' to stitch, were's the fun in doing something just because you feel that is what you 'should' be doing!

Get stuck in and wash those post project blues away.

:)

I say go with black if that is what you are inspired to do. It will be a beautiful quilt and I'm sure different from the first. LOL of course you could always do a purple quilt ... it goes with everything!

Congratulations on 500 post.

I agree, why would it be a cop out? If this idea is what you have in mind go for it. I would love to see a contemporary quilt using your sassa lynne threads.
Wishing you brighter days ahead and congratulations on the 500th post.

Hi, Jo!

I don't think it would be a cop out, but would you enjoy a change from black? I think a cream quilt would be so pretty - the lighter colors might be a little more uplifting if you're down in the dumps, too. And... since you're heading into summer, it might seem cooler. ? (that's so pathetic, isn't it?)

Then on the other hand, you should probably do whatever excites you the most at this point, and motivates you to move into the project.

Ok, as for denim. Ugh. For lots of embroidery - and especially for seams where the denim is doubled - ouch. I don't like embroidering on denim, personally. It's not bad in small pieces, using sharp small needles, but a whole quilt might get rather tiresome.

Look, keep your chin up! Don't let people who make you unhappy intrude in your life and your family!

Can't wait to see whatever project you develop!

Best,
Mary

Seeing as you are suffering from PTQD a block quilt would be the perfect remedy! ;)

Doing another black quilt isn't a cop out... it's a series!!! But, if you want to use some cream fabrics, you could do a black and cream quilt, that would be cool.

No way doing another black quilt would be a cop out! If it's what your heart desires then by all means do it. Besides, it will just keep adding incentive for me to do one too!! As for denim...I work with it a lot and can tell you that it is VERY hard stitching on it...particularly if there is more than one layer. Seam treatments would be awfully hard. Having said that - if you were to use shirtweight denim (as opposed to pants weight) you wouldn't have that problem. I'm still voting for the black though!

Jo, love the postcard!! As for your next quilt, apply "lifes lessons" and do what your heart tells you what to do. Debbie (Maine) campmoxie@yahoo.com.au

I think you should do what you want. Your black CQ was so pretty! I love it! I am doing a cream CQ right now and I like that I can use any color I want on it.

Who's the boss of you....you are girl....do another black quilt if that's what will make you happy...black is very elegant and vintage looking at the same time!

Just dropping by to say that I am doing a blog catch-up, and called over to yours among the first. So I am seeing your work after a long time away.

Jo - it really is stunning. All your work is the sort of stuff I want to do when I grow up.

i agree with Marty52...black and cream would be gorgeous!!! or work on two at a time...i never work all the way thru one project...i jump back and forth.(probably has something to do with my short attention span...ohhh whats that over there....shiny.......)

If you think of your next quilt as being the second of a series, that may help you get over the feeling of it being a cop-out. You obviously enjoyed working on the black; at no point did I hear you say you were so tired of all that black. I'd be willing to bet that you have all kinds of ideas that never got a chance to appear on the first black CQ! Go for it! Oh, and many congratulations on reaching your 500th posting!

Actually, I love the tones of the postcard you are giving away. How interesting would it be to flip it, do light fabrics and all black/dark embellishments?

Fibra Artysta said...

Oh, and I forgot to mention...don't do denim. I tried that once on CQ and it was painful - literally. I had to abandon the project, I found it way to hard to sew through and the few seams that I did do didn't look as good because it was too hard on the thread.

If you like the black, I don't see any reason not to use it.

What if you pieced a black block and a cream block - and see which one you can't wait to stitch?

Either way, I'll be watching the progress. I have printouts of your black blocks for my inspiration book.

That postcard looks SO much like caramel apples! I've seen a lot of tone on tone cream work in the past week and I'm loving it! I love it's softness and how it's not so "in your face" - kinda understated......

I really like the black stitching on the caramel/cream block. Almost stark, in a way, but startling beautiful and refreshing with the clean lines.

It would not be a cop out. I say if you are enjoying doing something, why stop? I think the threads often look better against the black. If you have really dark ones, they might look better against the cream. But almost all of them look good on black. I really enjoyed seeing your last one, so I'd love another one.

Go for black - the brilliant colours would look fabulous against it and as such would look so different from the last one you did. As to the postcard - it is wonderful - I really like the effect of black on shades of a single colour. I look forward to trying it out for myself in the near future once I get the use of my right hand back again. Let me tell you not being able to stitch is horrible.
