Vision a bit off..

My vision has not quite been realised. Damn these ideas that just can't make it to reality in a reasonable fashion. It has potential. You tell me what you think.
The bag is either too small (which it isn't) or the doily is too big (which I think it is).
The bag is great. I have used the principle of the knot bag pattern, but done away with the round bottom, and I am cheating with the lining too . It was very quick to put together.
I love the calico (muslin). That is a great base. I am going to work with it more. I think also the issue is that the doily is to dark (or conversely the muslin is too light!!). The poor doily was scorched, so I scorched it all over, and now it is to dark. I think if it was its original colour it would look better. I might tea stain the bag.
Anyway, the bag itself, a great little number. I am happy with the bag. I didn't do the "one handle shorter" as the knot bag pattern call for, but it will translate easily to this design to.
The doily on it concept...that still needs some work. ( I embroidered the word 'vintage' myself. I like that!)

There's definitely potential here. But to be honest? That beautiful doily looks dirty against the white fabric. If the base fabric was off-white or something, I think it wouldn't look like that.

It might get disguised once you add lots of stitching, though?

The bag definitely needs to be darker... maybe all the way to dark brown? Cool idea, though! Work it, baby. :0)

I think the bag needs to be darker too...or....lots of stitching around the doily using the same tones as are in the doily itself to blend the two together. Otherwise I think it's a great concept.

The cute doily, yes. The plain bag, no.
If the bag was simply dyed purple to match the violets it would be good.
You'll figure it out. :)

Yes, the bag needs to be darker. And are you totally set with using the doily as a whole? I've had good luck using "cutter" linens in sewing. If you want to keep it whole, they need to be tied together more (color/visual "weight"). If you're OK with snipping, then size down the doily and applique it without that lacy trim around it. Use a coordinating ribbon instead and a third color strip of purple or yellow. That's just MHO and IF it's a cutter. Love watching this.... Hugs, Cathy

I also agree that the bag needs to be darker or maybe use material with a small design. But your designs are so lovely that I'm sure you will think of something great. Half the battle is knowing that it's not quiet right!!

Others have commented on the contrast - I agree.

But the doily itself seems wrong to me. It seems too, well, last minute. Just slapped on. That might be helped by changing the bag color, so maybe you should re-evaluate at that point. But I also don't like how the trim sticks out from the bag, and I think the doily is too big. Maybe if it wrapped around the side or bottom of the bag? Or, like Cathy K says, if you're willing to cut it, that would help with the balance.

Hi Jo:

The first thing I thought when I saw the picture of this bag is that I really liked both the doily and the bag, and my second thought was that the doily was too big, LOL!

And, then I read your comment saying exactly the same thing...LOL!! Hmmm...methinks that maybe the doily IS lovely, but too big... Whatcha think?

hey! i think the problem is that the doily just looks like its sitting on top of the bag and isn't part of it, have you thought about maybe embroidering the word vintage across the edge of the doily and directly on to the bag? you need something to tie them both together....
